Reflexology

What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a method for activating the healing powers of the body. For thousands years, the Chinese, Indians and Egyptians worked on the feet to promote good health. But why is it still used today?  It has been established that there are energy zones running through our bodies and reflex areas in our feet that correspond to major organs and other body parts.

Reflexology emphasises the manipulation of a particular area of the foot, the rest of the organs in that zone will feel a positive benefit (almost like a messaging service). Reflexologists use their thumbs and fingers to find certain areas of weakness or tenderness in the reflexes, reading these as signs of a problem in the corresponding part of the body and then working on that reflex as appropriate.

Benefits

  • Relieves stress and tension and has a deeply relaxing effect on the body

  • Improves blood circulation; increases the efficiency of all organs and cells

  • Helps release trapped nervous energy and efficiency of nerves (by stimulating 7,000 nerves in the feet)

  • Improves waste removal and elimination

  • Activates the body’s self healing

Reducing Stress

Stress surrounds everyone; it’s neither good nor bad and is something that we HAVE to live with. Many illnesses and diseases are stress related and it affects people every day. Reflexology reduces stress by creating an ultimate relaxation. During reflexology 7,000 nerves are stimulated by touching the feet – this encourages the opening of neural pathways which allow your body to send messages to the brain and allow your body to work at optimum levels. When our bodies are stressed they must work harder than usual in order to keep a balance. Therefore, stressed people tend to over-use conventional relaxation methods such as drinking and smoking in order to reach the same calm as those who are less stressed. Reflexology brings the body back into balance and removes the build up of tension. Reflexology also boosts the immune system – which is weakened by the constant stress, removes toxins, boosts energy levels and induces calm in both the body and the mind.

Reflexology in the Elderly

For many elderly people loss of physical contact plays a large part as people age, lose their partners and friends and become withdrawn as a result of change. Many elderly people suffer from respiratory problems, lowered immunity and urinary problems. Reflexology can help boost the immune system and regulate digestive and urinary systems and overall help induce relaxation.
